I hate/love FRANK LONG ROAD! (09/08/07)

In upstate New York for the weekend for the Fey family clambake and got out on the bike with John and CJ before the debauchery. WOW, I was crushed... I really should have thought a little bit more when at mile 5 CJ asked me what gearing I was running and said he wasn't going to have it easy at ratio's better suited for steep climbing than I did (He is a cat 3 rider and is way way stronger than I am) so between mile 6 and 7 of this ride (Frank Long Road) was the steepest thing I've ever been on! The GPS says that it went up to 21% grade... disgusting... I got to the crest of the steepest section, saw how much more climbing I had to do, looked at my HRM alarming like crazy @ 205 (never been above 203 before) and got off my bike to compose myself... (compose means if I went another couple of feet I would have passed out) I draped my useless carcass over my bike and hoped my breath would return. Five minuets later I got on my bike and pedaled as hard as I could to get my bike up to 4mph and willed myself up the next rise where I promptly dismounted and had another breather... I wasn't done yet though and once I felt I could move my legs I finished it out where CJ and John were waiting for me with concerned expressions. My cardio system felt better pretty quick but my legs were heavy for ages fortunately most all of the climbing was done in that one little section of road and the vast majority of riding was downhill from there on out. It didn't hurt that it wasn't hot and there was good visibility for appreciating the agricultural land we were out on.

Total Time (h:m:s) 2:31:36
Distance (mi ) 36.21
Moving Speed (mph) 15.0 avg.
Elevation Gain (ft) +3,032
